I wanted something that would remind me of the words I had forgotten, would teach me the words I never knew and would give me the opportunity to practice the words and phrases I already knew.

I also wanted to be able to learn to read the words. We already had the well-known Rosetta Stone sets in several different languages but I wanted to know about the less pricey, just as effective if not more so alternatives, and to find those best for use in learning foreign and difficult languages, among them being Chinese Mandarin.

EuroTalk invited us to try out several of their products. With a range of apps and software available they seem to have every age and ability covered. Android users can try out the original version of the EuroTalk software, uTalk Classic. This app teaches you the key words that will get you on your way to learning a new language from scratch.

There are clear images which provide you with a visual association for each word and the words are spoken by native speakers. You can also record your voice and play it back in order to practice your pronounciation. Using the app is very simple. The lessons are divided into nine different subjects: first words, foods, colours, phrases, body, numbers, time, shopping and countries.

The word practice takes you through a list of approximately 45 words and short phrases such as yes, no, thank you, please and sorry as well as objects and items such as different drinks, rooms and numbers one, two and three.

Once you are confident that you can remember the words you can choose to do the quiz. Now, even though there are options for three levels of the game we could only get as far as the Easy Game option.

This is probably because the uTalk Classic app is just the basic taster version. With a little practice both Ollie and Paddy were able to achieve high scores of 50 points which thrilled and encouraged them at the same time. We were excited to hear that EuroTalk have now introduced yet another app to their collection.

The uTalk Learn a Language app allows you to learn any of languages in the same manner as before. Not only does this allow you to learn any language from the range from a single download saving that precious storage space, but it is also absolutely free! The search function proved to be invaluable when we were stuck on a particular word and the portability means we can practice in short bursts here and there when we have a spare moment or two.

If you have found yourself completing the levels provided and like the way it works you then have the option to upgrade to uTalk Essentials or Premium levels which unlock even more words and phrases — up to 1, more, in fact — to help you with your new language. Overall, we found the EuroTalk apps extremely user-friendly. This program specifically focuses on useful and up-to-date phrases and vocabulary designed to improve conversational confidence with teenagers' social lives in mind.

This, along with colorful graphics and plenty of games make EuroTalk especially suited to children and young teens. For a comprehensive German course it will be necessary to buy the box set and although all 5 products can be bought separately, it is far more economical to buy them together. EuroTalk begins by going through basic vocabulary with Vocab Builder and Talk Now German, which is followed by Talk More German, in which users are taught basic grammatical structure.

With this understood you should be able to begin forming simple sentences, incorporating the words you have learned throughout the course. World Talk then gives you examples of how and where you can apply your German to real world situations, regardless of your level. We especially liked the section on navigating a conversation in which you do not necessarily know all of the vocab being used.

Overall, WorldTalk is great for giving you the confidence to take that daunting yet vital step of actually using your German in the real world. Talk the Talk German builds on this by introducing you to colloquial German while other features such as Eurotalk German, speech recognition, multimedia, games and quizzes ensure that there is always something new to hold your attention.

Using your German in real life situations is one of the best ways to remember it and improve your conversational confidence. However, in this case it is important that you practice your accent; nothing can dent your confidence more than putting all your study and hard work to the test only to discover that no one can understand you!

Luckily, EuroTalk includes speech recognition technology with native speaker comparison software which is a great way for you to get your tongue, as well as your head, around the language. Your conversation skill being, arguably, the most important part of any language, speech recognition technology almost comes as standard in this category as it is the next best thing to conversing with real German speakers.

One drawback we did find with EuroTalk is the fact that, although having it all on 1 DVD-ROM is very convenient, you cannot play this on a CD player and are consequently tied to your computer when learning. It is quite clear that EuroTalk is orientated towards children and teenagers. With colorful graphics and loads of games there is no other product in this category that markets itself as such.

It has even been used successfully with children with specific learning difficulties. As opposed to boring textbooks and classrooms, learning a language with EuroTalk is associated with fun. However, this does mean that adults may find Eurotalk German quite limited both in content and in style.

Some of us, especially children, will simply not need In-depth grammatical explanations and flashy features.
